he word “webmaster” has been around
Tsince anyone can remember. Many people
performing many different types of functions
have been referred to as webmasters over the
couple decades the web has been world-wide.

Yet the word “different” here is applied very
seriously.

Because webmasters are different things to
different people, often depending on different
contexts.

For example, the person who maintains a
website’s physical daily operation, tweaking
and smoothening its performance for users
has been called the webmaster.

Sometimes Site Operators (who sometimes
are only site owners, but who themselves
have been referred to as webmasters) refer
to their go-to person for site repairs, script
installations and design adjustments as “my
webmaster”.

But there are also the affliates of sponsor
programs who use their own techniques to
promote sites under that program’s umbrella
who are referred to as webmasters, regardless
whether they have any programming
knowledge or behind-the-code experience.

And then of course there are in-house
promotion experts who have perhaps no
hands-on responsibilities but oversee and
