The first one explains the basics of Affiliation

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Most probably everybody reading this article has heard the term Affiliate Marketing. Some of you will be true experts on this topic already, others will have only a slight idea about it. The easiest way to describe it is professional recommendation marketing. We all know invite codes from friends or in groups to join a certain service online or offline. This code is often connected to the account of the friend, or the owner of the group. Once we join, or make a purchase, the code owner, or person that sent the link gets a bonus from it. Often that is money. Now imagine somebody doing that professionally. So instead of doing that with friends, the Affiliate is creating this opportunity. As we all know it’s a real business model and Affiliates spending more than 6 figures daily on Mediabuying are not as rare as we would think. The most important “currency” in that world is Traffic. Traffic are practically the users of the internet.

What are the players in the market?

The typical players in a simplified model are:

-Affiliate: Characteristic is that the Affiliate promotes the offers of somebody else. We can consider the affiliate the player, that sends traffic with the goal of getting a commission for that

-Advertiser: Owns the product that the Affiliate promotes. Takes care that the offer is working well and creates money. In exchange for the traffic, the Advertiser pays the Affiliate a commission. Usually, the Advertiser uses for that an Affiliate Program/Network.

-Traffic source: This can be an affiliate itself, for example, a website, or sell the traffic to affiliates that try to make the most out of it.

-Traffic network: Buys the Traffic from a source and sells it to the Affiliates. Affiliates can in that way buy only what they need instead of all the traffic of a source.

-Affiliate Network/program: The business partner of the affiliate. From these partners, the affiliates get the commission and have the day-to-day talks. A program is usually the owner of the offers, and a network promotes the offers of another advertiser. Often we encounter mixes of both.

Most common Affiliate Types:

-SEO Affiliates: Generate organic traffic over Search results or branding. The traffic is considered free, but that is not correct. It costs high amounts of money to maintain the site with engaging content and to keep the results up in the Rankings of the Search engines. Typical for these are blogs and tube sites.
-SEM Affiliate: Are buying advertising to be listed on top of the search results. Often it is comparing sites or promotions from direct brands

-Media buyers: Nowadays the most common type is bought traffic. Usually from Traffic Networks. Bigger Affiliates also buy the Advertising directly from the Traffic source. The skills of this affiliate are optimizing funnels, analyzing patterns, and having the best offers to make the most

-Mailers: Sending out Emails to lists that are matching the products

-Networks: Are a middleman between the Advertiser and the Affiliate. As they send the traffic to the endpoint, they can be considered an Affiliate too. Additionally, nearly all Networks have their own Affiliate Team to test offers.

-Social Media Affiliates: Act like a Mediabuyer with the difference that they work on big social media networks.

Affiliate Payouts:
We all work for money, and that is for affiliates not different. In the Affiliate industry, several payout types are established. Let’s look at the most important ones:

-CPL (Cost per Lead) Payout for the submitting of data of a user. There are 2 main options:
SOI (Single opt In) for the pure submitting
SOI (Double opt-in) for confirming the signup per click in an email

-Revenue Share: The Affiliate gets a certain % of the userspend/profit etc. That can be from 0,5% on certain e-commerce offers up to 90% on digital products

-CPA (Cost per Action/Acquisition) The Affiliate gets a 1-time payment or a certain action of a user. In most cases, this is the first purchase and can be called then also CPS (Cost per Sale)

-CPI (Cost per Install) Affiliate gets paid when the user does an install. Usually, an APP but also a browser plugin would fall under this payout

-CPC (Cost per Click) The Affiliate gets paid per click. As there is at least at the start no direct relation between the user behavior, I don’t consider it as a classical Affiliate Payout Model

-Hybrid A combination of 2 or more models. The most common one is a combination of CPL and Revshare

We hope that this small introduction to Affiliation was helpful for you. In the next issue, we will cover the basics of Affiliate Management

Highlighting the Return of the Adult Magazine Genre

Hustler magazine celebrates its 50th year, Playboy announce a relaunch of their magazine in 2025 and X3 unveil a brand-new magazine – does this spark the return of the magazine genre?

According to one ‘Adult Magazines’ listing, the range of publications available is still strong. Although it’s not at the dizzying levels of the 1970’s and 1980’s, there are still plenty to choose from. For example, Skinmagz offer over 3000 different titles which includes both current and vintage issues. As well as Hustler and Playboy, you can get your fill from Goodfellas, Inciter, Bed Bath and Boudoir, Poshi, Masculin, Inked Up, Woba Models, Mayfair, Pabo and Flash to name but a few.

There is something simple and also very special about Adult magazines which surpass the plethora of Porn sites and provide an intimate relationship with the viewer. Back when magazines were in print form only, opening the plastic covering to reveal the unadulterated shiny pages was a sight to behold. Those magazines often had many lives and by the time they were in the hands of the 4th or 5th owner, some pages were most likely unreadable! Luckily with today’s online versions, the quality is pristine to every single viewer.

Accepting the Female Form is Art

There has long been a campaign for celebrating the female form (particularly when naked) as art. The line drawn between art and pornography is an age-old question.

The word ‘pornography’ comes from two Greek words. Porne, the word for ‘prostitute,’ and graphein, or ‘to write,’ are combined to make a word that refers to anything that is primarily used to, or intended to, sexually arouse or excite sexual desire in people. This means that, technically, anything from a romance novel to an X-rated movie could be labelled as “pornography” depending on whether someone finds it sexually stimulating. Definitions of “pornography” and “obscenity” tend to evolve over time and can vary depending on the community you live in and its standards for sexual behaviour. For example, a lingerie catalogue featuring models in bras and panties might be considered “pornographic” by one group of people in one area, while in another community with different ethical, religious, or moral beliefs, it might be viewed as perfectly acceptable. While images of naked individuals may or may not be considered pornographic, it’s likely that pictures of people, whether nude or clothed, engaged in sexual activities involving the breasts, buttocks, or genitals will be classified as “pornography.”

The one thing that most objectors never consider is whether or not it is consensual, and to what extent it may affect others. Generally, anything vaguely related to porn is advertised with all the legal notices, such as age restrictions and warnings, notifying the viewer in advance of the impending images. The majority of humans who have reached the age of consent, have the ability to choose whether or not they engage with these images. One could argue that this choice should remain, and the focus should be on whether or not those involved in the production of the images are treated responsibly, fairly and above all everything was consensual.

The Classic Page Turner

The simple act of turning the page to reveal the secrets held are what places magazines on a different level. There is a similarity when asking people to compare their experience with electronic readers. Whilst they enjoy the ease with which an electronic reader can be transported and accessed, it’s never quite the same as turning the page of a physical book.

Online flip magazines go one better as they mimic the original format and offer the reader an intimate insight into the content with easy-to-follow page numbers and without the need for continuous scrolling.

There’s a certain magic involved when you are turning the pages of a magazine. Many of the publications that have gone digital still produce something online which stirs memories of flicking from page to page. It’s easy to see the Ads for example. When you come to an article about the latest Sex Toy practises, you could guarantee you wouldn’t have to look too far to see an ad relating to said products.

Links are a clever way forward without the need for advertising space but how often does the reader skip past them for fear of what they might be clicking on, or the fact they might lose the thread of what they are reading. A simple banner or side advert clearly shows the product or service, and there is no mistaking where you will end up when you click on it when you’ve finished reading the article.

Many of the adult and glamour based brands have bounced back with magazine style formats, with some even upping their print production.

Hustler

This year Hustler is celebrating its 50th year! Introduced in 1974 by Larry Flynt, it was initially conceived as a way of producing cheap advertising for his strip club business at the time. The late Larry Flynt’s wife Liz now runs it. She made a promise to continue to run the business without compromise, which she has done very effectively. You can now receive the print version of the monthly magazine for just $9.69 per month, or for the discounted price of just $44.95 a year (USA and Canada only).

Hustler terms itself as ‘Unapologetic and Real Adult Entertainment’. Probably the most controversial pictures ever published were of Jackie Onassis sunbathing in the nude. The former first lady became known as the ‘Billion Dollar Bush’ when photos of her appeared in the August 1975 issue of the magazine. It’s reported that sales of Hustler went from just a few thousand to more than 2 million. At its peak in the 1980’s it had a circulation in excess of 3 million, and despite the overall downturn in adult publications, it still quotes a circulation of around 500,000 as well as a strong following of over 200k fans on Insta.

Sex Toys on Display (Changing Attitudes Towards the Use of Sex Toys) and the Growth in Sales

Evolution of attitudes towards the use of sex toys

Historically, the use of sex toys has been a topic shrouded in secrecy and stigma, with limited public discussion or acceptance. In the past, sex toys were often associated with shame, embarrassment, and taboo, leading to a lack of open conversation about their use. However, as societal attitudes towards sexuality have evolved, there has been a notable shift in perspectives regarding the use of sex toys. This shift is reflected in the growth of the global sex toys market, which was valued at USD 21674.15 million in 2022 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of 5.76% during the forecast period. The increasing visibility and availability of sex toys in the market indicate a changing landscape where individuals are more open to exploring and embracing sexual pleasure in diverse ways.

One of the key factors driving the changing attitudes towards sex toys is the influence of media and popular culture. In recent years, mainstream media platforms have played a significant role in normalizing conversations about sexual wellness and breaking down traditional taboos surrounding the use of sex toys. Television shows, movies, and online content have depicted characters using sex toys in a positive and non-judgmental light, contributing to a more open and accepting societal view. As a result, the global sex toys market, estimated at USD 35.2 billion in 2023, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.69% from 2024 to 2030, indicating a widespread acceptance and demand for a diverse range of products.

Moreover, there has been a notable cultural shift towards embracing sexual pleasure and wellness, leading to increased acceptance and usage of sex toys. Women, in particular, have increasingly embraced the use of vibrators, dildos, and other sex toys for sexual stimulation and pleasure, with a growing trend towards destigmatizing these products. Studies, such as Lieberman’s research in 2016, have shown that feelings of social solidarity have helped female consumers overcome fears associated with using sex toys, highlighting the changing perceptions and attitudes towards these products. As the global online sex toys market is estimated to grow by USD 18.93 billion from 2024 to 2028 at a CAGR of about 14.96%, it is evident that the cultural shift towards openness and acceptance of sex toys is driving significant market growth and changing societal norms.

Increased visibility and acceptance of sex toys in mainstream society

The marketing strategies and product innovation in the sex toys industry have played a significant role in increasing the visibility and acceptance of these products in mainstream society. Companies in this market have been proactive in shaping the narrative around sex toys, moving away from traditional taboos and stigma towards a more open and inclusive approach. By strategically marketing vibrators and other sex toys as tools for sexual empowerment and pleasure, these companies have successfully shifted societal perceptions and normalized discussions around sexual wellness. This shift in marketing tactics has not only contributed to the growth in sales but has also helped in breaking down barriers and stereotypes associated with the use of sex toys, making them more accessible and acceptable to a wider audience. – The rise of e-commerce platforms and direct-to-consumer brands – Shaping the meaning of vibrators through marketing – Normalizing conversations about sexual wellness

The influence of social media and online platforms has been instrumental in changing attitudes towards the use of sex toys and increasing their visibility in mainstream culture. With the digital landscape providing a platform for open discussions about sexuality and sexual wellness, individuals are more exposed to diverse perspectives and information regarding sex toys and their benefits. Social media platforms have allowed for the sharing of personal experiences, recommendations, and reviews, creating a sense of community and normalizing the use of sex toys among a broader audience. This increased online presence and engagement have not only fueled sales growth but have also fostered a more accepting and inclusive environment for individuals exploring their sexual desires and preferences. – Changing societal attitudes towards sexuality – Increasing awareness and acceptance of sexual wellness – Fostering a sense of community and normalization

Celebrity endorsements and advocacy by public figures have also played a crucial role in reshaping attitudes towards sex toys and contributing to the growth in sales. By aligning themselves with reputable brands and openly discussing their use of sex toys, celebrities have helped reduce the stigma and shame associated with these products, making them more mainstream and socially acceptable. Public figures advocating for sexual wellness and the use of sex toys have sparked important conversations about pleasure, self-care, and intimacy, further normalizing these topics in society. As influential voices promote the benefits and enjoyment of sex toys, they contribute to a cultural shift towards embracing diverse expressions of sexuality and promoting positive attitudes towards sexual exploration and satisfaction. – Aligning with reputable brands – Reducing stigma and shame – Promoting positive attitudes towards sexual exploration

Growth in sales and the expanding market for sex toys

The global sex toys market is witnessing substantial growth, with the industry estimated to have reached a size of USD 35.2 billion in 2023. This growth trajectory is projected to continue, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.69% from 2024 to 2030. Market trends indicate that changing societal attitudes towards sexuality and the increasing awareness of sexual wellness are key drivers behind this growth. Consumers are seeking more personalized products, higher-quality materials, and innovative designs in the adult toy industry, reflecting a shift towards a more sophisticated and diverse market. Moreover, there has been a notable rise in luxury sex toy sales, indicating a growing demand for high-end products among certain consumer segments. This expansion in the market is fueled by factors such as increased awareness of sexual wellness, changing consumer attitudes towards sex toys, and a push for more innovative and premium offerings.

One of the significant shifts in the sex toys market is the changing demographic patterns in consumer behavior. Across regions like Asia Pacific, there has been a noticeable evolution in people’s attitudes towards the use and adoption of sex toys, leading to market companies adapting to cater to these changing preferences. Notably, in certain demographics, the average spending on sex toys has exceeded 100 U.S. dollars, indicating a growing acceptance and popularity of these products. This shift in consumer behavior and attitudes is expected to further popularize the use of sex toys and drive increased demand, contributing to the overall expansion of the sex toy industry.

Despite the growth and evolving consumer trends in the sex toys market, there are regulatory challenges that the industry faces, particularly related to the legalization of sex toy sales and the establishment of standardized guidelines for product safety and quality. The lack of clear regulatory standards raises concerns among consumers about the safety and efficacy of sex toys, highlighting the need for regulatory frameworks to ensure consumer protection and product quality. However, the significant expansion of the global sex toys market is primarily attributed to changing perceptions towards these products, increased media exposure, and a growing emphasis on sexual wellness and pleasure. With the market expected to reach USD 75.73 billion by 2030, the industry is poised for continued growth, driven by shifting attitudes and increasing demand for diverse and innovative sex toy offerings.

Is Free Porn really Free?

The hidden costs of free porn

The accessibility of free porn on the internet comes with hidden costs, particularly in terms of exposure to potentially harmful content. While visiting porn websites may not seem inherently dangerous, deceptive advertisements and misleading links can lead individuals to explicit material that they did not intend to view. This exposure to pornographic content can have detrimental effects, especially on children and adolescents who may come across such material unintentionally. Studies have linked early exposure to pornography with negative outcomes, such as lower academic performance and distorted perceptions of sex and relationships. Moreover, the easy access to online pornography raises concerns about the health and well-being of young individuals, highlighting the hidden risks associated with free porn consumption.

Beyond the immediate exposure to explicit content, the psychological impact of free porn on consumers is a significant concern. Research has shown that regular consumption of pornography can lead to addiction-related brain changes, affecting an individual’s mental health and well-being. Discussions surrounding the psychological impacts of pornography underscore the importance of promoting healthy distribution of sexual content to mitigate potential harms. Studies have also revealed a strong correlation between pornography consumption and increased stress, anxiety, and depression, highlighting the detrimental effects on consumers’ mental health. These findings emphasize the hidden costs of free porn, shedding light on the psychological toll it can take on individuals who engage with such content regularly.

In addition to the impact on consumers, the free porn industry often exploits performers, raising ethical concerns about the true cost of “free” adult entertainment. Unlike personal subscription-based services that may offer performers more control and compensation, free porn sites like PornHub have created challenges for porn workers to earn a sustainable living. Reports of mistreatment and exploitation of women recruited into the porn industry have long been associated with the business, although reliable data on such practices remains limited. The perception of free porn as legitimate and devoid of exploitation can further perpetuate harmful practices within the industry, highlighting the complex dynamics at play behind the illusion of “free” online adult entertainment.

The business model behind free porn

The business model behind free porn sites relies heavily on advertising and data collection to generate revenue. While users may not directly pay for accessing content on these platforms, their viewing habits and personal information are often collected and utilized for targeted advertising purposes. This data can be incredibly valuable to advertisers looking to reach specific demographics, making free porn sites a prime target for ad placements. By leveraging user data and advertising partnerships, these sites can monetize their large and diverse audiences effectively, turning viewer engagement into financial gain.

In addition to advertising, free porn sites often employ freemium models to entice users to upgrade to premium content. Freemium models offer users a combination of complimentary and extra-cost services, with the option to access exclusive high-quality videos and uncensored material by paying for a premium subscription. This strategy capitalizes on the demand for premium porn content while still attracting a wide audience with free offerings. As the demand for pornography continues to grow, especially with an increasing number of female consumers, the freemium model proves to be a lucrative approach for monetizing adult content online.

Affiliate marketing is another key avenue through which free porn sites generate revenue. By partnering with companies to promote goods and services to their audience, these sites can earn commissions for driving traffic and conversions. Cross-promotion within the adult industry also presents opportunities for monetizing online porn traffic through strategic collaborations and mutually beneficial marketing efforts. While free porn sites may offer content at no direct cost to users, the behind-the-scenes monetization strategies, such as affiliate marketing and advertising, play a crucial role in sustaining these platforms and driving profitability.

Alternatives to free porn

Ethical paid platforms offer a viable alternative to free porn sites by providing content that is produced consensually, treats performers with respect, and ensures fair compensation for their work. These platforms prioritize the well-being and rights of performers and filmmakers, offering a more ethical and sustainable approach to consuming adult content. By supporting ethical paid sites, individuals can contribute to a more positive and respectful industry that values the dignity and agency of all involved.

Supporting independent creators is another alternative to free porn that promotes ethical consumption practices. Many independent content creators produce porn ethically and passionately, offering a diverse range of content that aligns with ethical standards and values. By seeking out and supporting independent creators, individuals can actively participate in promoting a more ethical and inclusive adult entertainment industry that values creativity, diversity, and consent.

Education on responsible consumption plays a crucial role in shifting attitudes towards porn consumption and promoting healthier viewing habits. By raising awareness about the impact of free porn on performers, the industry, and society as a whole, individuals can make informed choices about the content they consume and the platforms they support. Education can empower individuals to engage in critical thinking, media literacy, and ethical decision-making when it comes to consuming adult content, ultimately fostering a culture of respect, consent, and accountability in the realm of pornography consumption.

Similarly to other creators, they agree that AI is inevitable.  “AI is coming to us regardless. I think most people don’t know enough about it to use it as an effective tool  to make huge advances in their lives or careers. I think that it will more likely be integrated through business into the technology we use everyday and be a part of products we buy.”  Melissa said.

Jason gave perspective for creators around AI versus real people. He explained, “As somebody who has been using their camera for work for several years, it’s been interesting to notice the level of advancement in AI for imitating camera images, often with AI making better images than photographers. The flaw is that AI cannot capture unique, genuine human experiences and interactions. It can’t capture candid, real connection. While AI can create beautiful images, it can’t capture that realness, that memory.  It can feel like a big scary topic that is grabbing everyone’s attention, but most people in this industry are thriving on real attraction with other humans, and AI is very limited in that humanness. The AI bubble is really big and someday it’s going to burst.”

Melissa agreed and also made several points that creators should be aware of.  She said, “There is an ever widening gap between technological advancements and the legislation that governs them due to lack of interest by the political powers that be to educate themselves about what they legislate. That is an issue that we will see more and more as AI becomes more capable. I am optimistic that AI won’t take away from our current ability to work in this industry because AI isn’t a substitute for human connection. It can be distracting to focus on whether or not AI is a threat because ultimately, most of us understand very little about it and it’s coming, just like when the Internet was in its infancy and people debated whether or not it was good for society. None of those arguments matter now because we all use the Internet. I would encourage creators to focus on what they are good at, being uniquely themselves, rather than on learning AI.”

Deepfake technology has raised significant ethical concerns, particularly regarding consent. Non-consensual deepfake pornography is a growing issue, with individuals’ likenesses being used without their permission. This not only violates personal privacy but also has legal implications that the industry must navigate carefully. Additionally, the ease with which deepfake technology can replicate a creator’s likeness poses a threat to intellectual property. Unauthorized use of a creator’s image or persona can lead to revenue loss and damage to their brand. This necessitates robust legal frameworks and technological safeguards to protect creators’ rights. As those of us who operate in the adult entertainment industry are already aware, there is a growing demand for ethical standards in content production. Consumers are increasingly aware of issues such as consent and the ethical treatment of performers. Creators and platforms must ensure that their use of AI and deepfake technologies adheres to ethical guidelines to maintain trust and credibility with their audience.

So, how should creators navigate the future of AI in the adult industry?  First, creators must educate themselves about AI and deepfake technologies, understanding both their potential benefits and risks. Advocacy for stronger legal protections and ethical standards is crucial to safeguard the rights and interests of creators. While challenges exist, the potential benefits of AI and deepfake technology are significant and should not be overlooked. However, online platforms hosting adult content must take responsibility for implementing and enforcing policies that protect creators and users from the misuse of AI and deepfake technologies, and should be held to such standards by the creators/entertainers who work with them.  As with other issues in the adult entertainment industry, building a supportive community and collaborating with other creators can help navigate the evolving landscape. Sharing knowledge and resources can empower creators to better protect their IP and advocate for ethical practices within the industry.

The integration of AI and deepfake technology into the adult entertainment industry presents a complex mix of opportunities and challenges. While these technologies can enhance content creation and user engagement, they also pose significant ethical and legal issues. The future for adult industry creators will depend on how well they adapt to these changes, advocate for their rights, and leverage technology ethically and responsibly. By navigating these challenges thoughtfully, creators can continue to thrive in an increasingly digital and AI-driven landscape.
